Introduction

Green Renaissance is conceived as an initiative of the Borneo Tropical Rainforest Foundation and Global Eco-Rescue Foundation in consultation with the Government of Indonesia and the Organising Committee of the Bali Conference of the Parties to the U.N. Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). Together the aim will be to promote a new partnership between conservation and capital capable of implementing dynamic long-term responses to the environmental, economic and social crises facing the planet.

Above all, given the growing urgency, the initiative will seek to expedite the securitization of ecosystems in a manner that benefits the range of stakeholders on an unprecedented scale. Never more, given current levels of scientific, political and media consciousness, has the timing for such a Green Renaissance been more opportune … or more critical.

Background

Green Renaissance is set against the backdrop of a climate change crisis that Sir Nicholas Stern described in his landmark report on the Economics of Climate Change as "the greatest market failure the world has seen." Climate Change is costing the Earth, and it is costing business.

Traditional aid and financial mechanisms are increasingly inadequate to confront the escalating pace and magnitude of environmental degradation. Meanwhile, market tools that could constructively engage the private sector - the missing stakeholder - as a central entity in the environmental arena have been largely lacking.

The Green Renaissance aims to be the catalyst for a decisive response from the business and financial communities to priority global issues. In short, it will aim to make Bali the motor as well as the acronym for Bringing About Long-term Investment - for people, planet, profits and prosperity.
